Experimental copy of the M1 Garand by Yokosuka Naval Arsenal in calibre 7.7 x 58 mm (Type 99). For many decades this experimental rifle was classified as the `Type 5`. However, recent research by Japanese researchers has shown that the correct designation is `Type 4`. The error in `Type` classification appears to have been the result of an English language 1946 technical intelligence report which erroneasly identified the gun in question as the Type 5, the latter report forming a basis for all subsequent identifications of all remaining examples of the rifle. For some unknown reason, this particular rifle has been refinished, the external cmponents being finished in a bright lustrous blue and the wood work polished. Underside of Type 4 self-loading rifle.
